Finding your style with Olivia Caplan
From getting started, to incorporating materials and trends, watch our full video with Eddy and Olivia above to uncover a treasure trove of advice for your next project. Or read on to get an idea of where the conversation goes.
Where to begin
Although it may feel like you’re looking at a blank canvas when beginning a renovation or refresh, that’s rarely the case. Your space is usually already talking to you.
‘You could start with the actual architecture of the space,’ interior designer Olivia Caplan explains. ‘You could start with an impressive bay window or feature that you have, or you could start with something that you personally love, such as an heirloom or picture.
‘These things can act as a springboard for you to create the rest of the scheme, and once the things on the wall reflect you, it’s immediately your home.’
Incorporating materials and features
‘I think it’s important to include raw and natural materials like stone, wood, wool, clay – just things that have a bit of character and age to them,’ suggests Eddy as the conversation concentrates on the use of materials. ‘It’s grounding and ultimately good for your mental wellbeing.’
Olivia agrees: ‘Particularly when you’ve got a more traditional property, using reclaimed materials and softer textures gives more of a sense of history and helps with preventing you from erasing that from the building.
Introducing nature and pattern
Olivia embraces nature-inspired patterns and prints in her design work, believing strongly in their value. ‘It feels very natural to us as humans to bring the outside in,’ she says. ‘So, using prints and wallpapers that feature nature helps us to feel at home and it’s a great way to add colour and texture.’
Eddy takes the idea a step further. ‘I love gardening and this idea can be as literal as going outside and bringing flowers in,’ she says.
Navigating trends
Olivia and Eddy advise against designing solely based on current trends, especially if you want a timeless, long-lasting look curated over several years.
‘It’s so easy these days to be shown every trend under the sun,’ says Olivia, ‘and I think what’s important is to keep your core principles strong. For me that may be sticking to colours that have stood the test of time, then allowing the trends in through the accessories and maybe bits of lighting that are moveable.
‘But when you come to things like flooring and your core electrics, that’s where you should aim to stay timeless, because we’re hopefully not going to be changing those very often. They need to work hard for a long time.’
