Reflections on Kips Bay
We talk to designers about their spaces in the Kips Bay Decorator Show House Palm Beach.
As proud sponsors of the Kips Bay Decorator Show House Palm Beach event in Florida, our collections were featured in 15 spaces throughout the show house.
Before the event came to a close, we spoke to three design studios about how our details worked in their schemes.
Rayana Schmitz, of Firefinish Interiors, is a designer originally from Brazil who trod an unexpected path from firefighter to her current role. And she acknowledges the influence: ‘There is discipline in how I design, but also a lot of heart.’
Talking about her inspiration for Kips Bay, she continues: ‘Luxury, for us, isn’t about excess – it’s about intention, comfort, and a sense of ease that unfolds over time.
‘Our work is rooted in soft mineral palettes and richly tactile materials, where every surface invites touch and every detail has purpose.
‘Terra Calma is a sun washed sanctuary meant to feel like a quiet exhale. Patio do Sol extends the experience outdoors. It’s our modern interpretation of Palm Beach; sunlit, playful, layered with intention. The space is elevated but never too precious.’
And what was it about Corston that persuaded Rayana we were right for this project?
‘Architectural details are where a space either feels complete or unfinished. They’re touched every single day. They live at eye level. When they’re overlooked, even the most beautiful room can feel unresolved.
‘We’re constantly sourcing hardware and lighting that feel refined and enduring. Corston stood out immediately because of the restraint in the designs.
‘It’s essential that these details are timeless and not trend driven. We design for longevity.’
Kate Ives started her business, Kate Ives Design, eight years ago. ‘I’m definitely traditional, but not overly so,’ she explains. ‘I like layers and restraint and creating rooms that evolve over time.’
Kate continues: ‘I don’t want my clients to get tired of their environment. I want it to grow with them, grow with their families.’
Kate’s Kips Bay space was designed as a ‘ladies’ retreat’ and driven by the design preferences of her mother, Lucinda.
Featuring pale, sunny walls and mustard yellow touches, Kate used antique brass throughout. ‘I wanted it to feel intimate, fresh and slightly nostalgic,’ she explains.
As for choosing Corston, Kate was quick to insist on the importance of architectural details.
‘We’re constantly searching for hardware that doesn’t feel like an afterthought. Corston felt different immediately. It’s refined. It feels considered.
‘You touch architectural details every day and when they’re thoughtful and cohesive, the entire room feels resolved.’
LTA Interiors is a studio set up by sisters Lynn Berney and Tracey Gould, and now also incorporating the work of Alexa Evans.
Describing their philosophy, Lynn explains: ‘The best spaces are the ones that are timeless – they don’t follow what is today, they follow what you like.
‘Maybe you have pieces from today, maybe yesterday, whenever they were trending, maybe they were never trending – but the collaboration of these pieces creates your look, which should be timeless.’
‘Our room’s got this element of elegance, but at the same time, a relaxed feel. We wanted it to feel conversational – a place where women could hang out in a room full of luxury but at the same time feel comfortable.’
And what persuaded her that Corston details were right for this project?
‘We believe in harmony in a home,’ she says. ‘Not every room looks alike but it has to have a cohesive flow.’
About the individual details, she continues: ‘They’re eye-catching, and when they catch your eye, you realise every single detail has been thought through.’
