Crafting functional, personal spaces with Avenue Design Studio
When events coordinator Kate Davison first discovered Holly Marder’s Delft-based interior design studio on Instagram, the distinctive aesthetic – a harmonious blend of contemporary design and timeless elegance – stopped her mid-scroll.
So, when Kate bought a historic home in Belgium, there was no question about who would help transform her vision for her home into reality. Later, when she acquired a pied-à-terre in Amsterdam, she once again turned to Avenue Design Studio to help realise the project.
A dynamic partnership and genuine friendship followed, resulting in a meticulously crafted interior that masterfully blends old with new and functionality with beauty. Hear what Holly and Kate have to say about the journey above, or read on for the highlights.

‘Somos um pequeno estúdio de design de interiores especializado em casas pensadas e artesanais que são profundamente pessoais e funcionais,’, explica Holly.
Kate, entretanto, está igualmente investida em projetos orientados por detalhes: ‘Tenho experiência em arquivos históricos e adoro contar histórias, por isso tento tecer essas histórias através dos meus eventos, pelos espaços que gosto de modelar e pelas sessões fotográficas que acolho.’
‘Cresci rodeada de antiguidades,’ diz-nos Holly, ‘por isso tenho um profundo apreço pela arte artesanal e pela qualidade do usado dos móveis antigos que dá uma suavidade tão bonita ao design contemporâneo.’
‘ Eu realmente sinto que há uma arte em criar um espaço que evoca emoção e promove interação. Os materiais estão no centro de tudo o que criamos. São a base.’
O resultado
‘A minha parte favorita da casa é quando se entra e se está na cozinha, tem-se as vigas antigas por cima e uma cozinha muito sóbria mas impressionante’,diz Holly.
‘Gosto dos candeeiros Windsor,’ diz Kate. ‘Duplicámo-los por todo o espaço, o que atrai o olhar pelo apartamento. Faz com que o espaço se sinta coeso.’
'‘Acho muitíssimo importante que os detalhes sejam considerados desde o início. É como as joias. São coisas menores, mas podem ser tudo ou nada para o espaço,’conclui Holly.
The project
‘It was bringing back that serenity that we found in Belgium and trying to give it a more contemporary spin. And so the finishes [in Amsterdam] are a little harder, they're a bit more modern, a bit sharper.’
‘I’ve been working with Corston for quite some time,’ Holly explains, ‘and there was a particular finish that I felt was perfect for the pied-à-terre. That’s the bronze finish, because it’s that masculinity and the softness of the material and that slightly sort of off-black.’
‘We also needed to make a big impact in such a small space,’ Kate says. ‘With the lighting, we used fluted glass that mimicked the wood in the bookcases, for instance.’ ‘Finishing touches – things like the electric sockets – that are in plain sight are so often overlooked,’ adds Holly.
‘In that intentional process of bringing in the right [details] within the context of a small space, selecting the right finish was so important.’
